Neighbors know that Center Street is not what it could be. At the community visioning session, they outlined a number of issues, like speed of traffic, narrow and unsafe sidewalks, and expanses of empty asphalt.
The latest effort to revitalize the area between 34th Street and 36th Street began in 2016 when a Field Club resident with development experience purchased three properties with the hope of rehabbing them into new businesses.
Unfortunately, he soon became stuck in the same vicious circle that's kept the neighborhood unchanged for so long. From zoning to street layout to tax incentives, there are a number of linked issues prohibiting this developer (and others) from creating the type of community-oriented business area the neighborhood wants.
